Water filter watchlist

Independent filter rankings by verified contaminant removal rates. 7 categories, lab-tested, never mixed. Each filter type ranked against its peers only.

Evidence-based watchlist, not COA-verified ranking

Alternative Health trust rule: any water filter product without a public, downloadable COA or equivalent product-level lab report is automatically docked 50 points and cannot enter the COA-verified tier. The products on this page are ordered using the best public evidence we could find -- certifications, investigative testing, regulatory filings, and independent lab summaries -- but they are not treated as full COA-backed products like the bottled water rankings.

Berkey filters: EPA enforcement action

The EPA reclassified Berkey filters as unregistered pesticides in 2023 due to unsubstantiated bacteria and virus removal claims. Berkey has no NSF certification. Independent testing found PF-2 fluoride filters achieved only 50-78% efficiency (vs. claimed 95%) and leached aluminum at 7x the EPA secondary limit. Multi-million dollar settlement reached. Sales were halted in multiple states.

Filter categories

Countertop

Gravity-fed or pressurized units that sit on the counter. No plumbing modification required. Typical removal: heavy metals, chlorine, VOCs, some PFAS.

Brands being evaluated: Berkey, Brita, ProOne, Alexapure

Under-Sink

Installed under the kitchen sink with a dedicated faucet. Higher filtration capacity than countertop. Multi-stage systems common.

Brands being evaluated: Clearly Filtered, APEC, iSpring, Aquasana

Reverse Osmosis

Membrane-based filtration removing 95-99% of dissolved solids. Produces the purest output but generates wastewater. Often under-sink or countertop.

Brands being evaluated: AquaTru, Waterdrop, APEC RO, iSpring RCC7

Pitcher

Pour-through filters for basic contaminant reduction. Most affordable entry point. Limited capacity and removal spectrum.

Brands being evaluated: Clearly Filtered Pitcher, Brita, PUR, ZeroWater

Whole-House

Point-of-entry systems filtering all water entering the home. Addresses both drinking and bathing water. Requires professional installation.

Brands being evaluated: Aquasana Rhino, SpringWell, Pelican, US Water Systems

Shower

Inline filters reducing chlorine and chloramine in shower water. Primary concern is dermal absorption and inhalation of volatile chlorine compounds.

Brands being evaluated: AquaBliss, Jolie, Kohler Aquifer, Sprite

Distiller

Boils water and collects steam, removing virtually all contaminants including heavy metals, PFAS, bacteria, and dissolved solids. Removes minerals too.

How filter scoring works

Filters are scored by the same COA Purity Score framework as bottled water, adapted for removal effectiveness. Instead of measuring what's in the water, we measure what's removed. A filter tested against 20 contaminants that removes all 20 to below detection limits scores higher than one that removes 15 of 20.

Key differences from bottled water scoring: filters get bonuses for NSF/ANSI certification (42, 53, 58, 401, P473), for publishing third-party lab reports, and for testing against emerging contaminants (PFAS, microplastics, chromium-6) beyond the standard panel.

Common questions

How will water filters be scored?

Each filter will be scored by verified contaminant removal rates from independent lab testing. We test for removal of heavy metals (lead, arsenic, chromium), PFAS, VOCs, chlorine/chloramine, microplastics, and radiologicals. The COA Purity Score reflects the percentage of target contaminants removed to below detection limits, weighted by health significance.

Why separate rankings for each filter type?

A countertop filter and a whole-house system serve different purposes and cannot be meaningfully compared in a single ranking. A pitcher filter that removes 95% of lead is excellent for its category but cannot match the throughput of an under-sink RO system. Category integrity means each filter type is ranked only against its peers.

What about water distillers?

Water distillers are included as their own subcategory. Distillation removes virtually all contaminants by boiling water and collecting the steam, but also removes beneficial minerals. Our evaluation will cover purity of output, energy consumption, throughput rate, material safety (BPA-free components), and mineral remineralization options.

Do you test shower filters?

Yes. Shower filters are a distinct category because the primary concern is chlorine and chloramine exposure through skin absorption and inhalation, not drinking water contaminants. We evaluate shower filters on chlorine reduction, flow rate impact, cartridge lifespan, and KDF/carbon media quality.
