Supplement verification watchlist
10 supplement brands ranked by third-party verification tier. The supplement industry has minimal oversight -- most labels are marketing. These are the brands that submit to independent testing.
Evidence-based watchlist, not COA-verified ranking
Alternative Health trust rule: any supplement product without a public, downloadable COA or equivalent product-level lab report is automatically docked 50 points and cannot enter the COA-verified tier. The products on this page are ordered using the best public evidence we could find -- certifications, investigative testing, regulatory filings, and independent lab summaries -- but they are not treated as full COA-backed products like the bottled water rankings.

Common questions
What does USP Verified mean for supplements?
USP (United States Pharmacopeia) Verified means the product has been tested by an independent lab and confirmed to contain the declared ingredients at the stated doses, be free from harmful contaminants, break down properly for absorption, and be manufactured under FDA Good Manufacturing Practices. USP is the gold standard for mainstream supplement verification.
Are expensive supplement brands actually better?
Not necessarily. Nature Made (mid-price) has the most USP Verified products of any brand. Kirkland Signature (Costco, budget-price) also carries USP verification on many products. Price correlates more with marketing spend than with product quality. The key differentiator is whether a brand submits to independent third-party testing, not what it charges.
What percentage of supplements fail quality testing?
ConsumerLab found that nearly 30% of multivitamins fail testing. The Clean Label Project found that 47% of protein powders exceed California Prop 65 safety thresholds for heavy metals in a single serving. Plant-based and organic protein powders perform worse, with 77-79% exceeding lead limits.
Is Thorne worth the premium price?
Thorne holds NSF Certified for Sport credentials, TGA certification (Australia, stricter than FDA), and performs four rounds of in-house testing plus third-party validation. It is the chosen partner of the Mayo Clinic. Whether the premium price is 'worth it' depends on your priorities -- the same ingredients with USP verification from Nature Made or Kirkland may cost a fraction of the price.
